Most people believe that online riches are far more accessible than their offline equivalents but the reality may surprise you.  The truth is that the division between rich and poor is far smaller in the offline world and the concentration of wealth online is unmatched anywhere else in the world.

A recent study by Inktomi and NEC Research shows that there are currently over two billion websites on the internet.  Meanwhile, if your website gets more than 100 unique visitors per day, it’s already within the top 150,000 from a traffic perspective.  That means 99.9% of websites get fewer than 100 unique visitors per day and 98% of websites get fewer than 10 unique visitors per day.

The internet sees about 40 million unique users on an average day.  Alexa, the preeminent internet traffic monitoring platform, ranks all the websites on the internet according to which are most popular.  As of November 2007, Yahoo is the number one website and Google is number two.  Each site gets more than 10 million unique visitors per day.

Alexa focuses its statistics on the top 100,000 websites, largely because it’s those websites that monopolize the vast majority of traffic on the internet.  With a total of two billion websites, that means the top 0.005% support the wants and needs of 40 million people per day.

Online wealth is driven by traffic.  You could have the best website in existence but if it’s not getting any traffic, it’s worthless.  You could have the best product at the lowest price but without traffic, nobody knows about it.  You could have the best advertising beautifully embedded in your webpages but with no impressions, that advertising will command nothing in exchange.

The websites that carry the traffic receive the benefits.  They can establish multiple streams of revenue around their products, other people’s products and advertising.  And the path into these upper echelons is exponential.  Revenues can multiply quickly once you advance through the top 100,000 positions.

Of course, the arrival into these elite internet ranks isn’t the end of the process.  A lot of people who get there quickly realize that staying there is easily as hard as getting there in the first place.  Maintaining your position with search engines as well as human traffic requires constant updating and content generation.  But a dedication to the process can leave you in the middle of raging river, making money at every angle.

The nice thing about the internet is that the goal is accessible to anyone.  In many cases, it doesn’t even cost a lot of money.  It just takes time, that’s all.  It takes a consistent dedication to the process and that’s precisely what most people don’t have.  Indeed, the biggest advantage you have on the internet is that most of your competition doesn’t have the dedication to follow through on the process.
