In January 2006, I started my Beyond the Rate podcast series.  Little did I realize it would gain popularity and get downloaded over 17,000 times in 27 countries.  I was a Mortgage Broker looking for purchase and refinance transactions and here I was getting emails from Holland and India asking me questions about the American mortgage industry.  It all pointed in a very different direction than I originally intended.

I spent much of the next year trying to build exposure for my podcast series right here in northern California but to no avail.  Although my series was getting downloaded with increasing frequency, it was a very particular type of person who was finding the series online and seeing the value it provided.  In fact, most people still don’t even know what a podcast is.

I learned something very valuable during this time.  I learned that a local business doesn’t benefit much from successful internet marketing.  I learned that a business wanting to capitalize on the power of the internet needed to reposition its business to cater to an international audience.  I was forced through the process myself because the incoming requests pulled me into different areas.

The point is that the internet is an incredibly global reality and you need to think globally to capitalize on the potential.  Regardless what your business is, you need to think of a way of distribute your value to international locations.  Obviously, the first qualifiers are information products that can be downloaded from anywhere.  But even local businesses like mortgages carry opportunities in distant locations.

In my case, I started producing educational products like training programs to sell to my distant audience.  And the reach caught me off guard to say the least.  Today, I’m doing more and more online marketing every day and am looking forward to a trip to Sweden where I’ll be an instructor at the 2007 Internet Marketing Conference.  Indeed, things have changed.

Regardless what your business is, you need to sit down and think about how you can add value to people who live outside your local community.  Get creative.  It could come in a variety of different forms although information is usually a good place to start.  Take your expertise and reformulate it into products you can sell.  Perhaps the information is designed to benefit your customers as you do now.  But perhaps it’s designed to benefit your competitors.  Think outside the box.  Consider any way you can add value to someone else’s life and begin the process of repositioning.
